Transportation in Philippines tourists should know

Whether you have been to Philippines to travel or are living in these islands, you might have used some kind of following vehicles. These are unique and traditional vehicles of Philippines. This post will introduce vehicles in Philippines in general. Maybe some of them will be your choices.

When American troops left Philippines after World War II, they left a series of their jeeps, the overall purpose of all kind of vehicles are used for transportation. Philippines people were unable to dispose of jeeps, but they reused and turn jeeps into unique personal vehicles. Currently, they use jeeps  as public buses but personally.

Tricycle (Tricycles has motor)

This kind of vehicle is quite popular  in cities and tourist destinations in Philippines, if tourists move in a short and medium distance, tricycle is good on that because its rates is relatively cheap. And it is also safer than other types of vehicles.

Pedicab (Cyclos)

Here, cyclos also have 3 wheels but different from Vietnam cyclos is the passenger sitting on the right side of driver. It’s like three-wheeled vehicle with motor (Tricycles), but rider have to pedal by foot. Also the advantage of this vehicle type is environment protecting, but the downside is slow – moving, it good for tours in a small area, you can do sightseeing on the way and stop wherever you want.

Kalesa (horse cart)

The horse car serves only for tourists, because nobody in Philippines use it as a properly vehicle of transportation. If driver feel you are friendly, he may let you control  the horse cart in a short distances. You can go by horse cart in Intramuros ancient citadel.

Roro (ferry)

With over 7000 islands, transportation of people between islands almost thanks to Redo, a large vessel is capable of carrying both cars and passengers. Also can say this is a combination of ferry and vessel. Roro means roll-on roll-off.

Habal Habal

Habal Habal name seems to be special name but actually it is motorbike taxi. A vehicle is not strange to people in The Southeast Asia. However, in Philippines, they carry too many people on one Habal Habal, an average of 4-7 people, maybe even up to 13 people. People often put more 2 wooden planks on 2 sides of vehicles to increase ability of capacity, but ability of carrying is not increased. This vehicle operates mainly in the mountain area.

Railroad Kariton

If you miss your train, do not be too anxious because you can catch one of the railroad kariton (a wooden vehicle running on rails). The driver push the car to run on rails.

Kalabaw

In the same of other Southeast Asian countries, buffalo is indispensable in agriculture. And in Philippines, buffalo (kalabaw) is not only used in agricultural works, but also for travel in rural areas.
